Macking ain't dead, it just moved to the internet

Somewhere, Texas- Social
media is still a fairly young invention, but boy did it come just in the nick
of time. What has happened to the average everyday Joe, he or she can now be
anyone they want to be and the whole world may very well be watching.
In
the hip hop culture during the mid to late 90s it became more and more popular
to be flamboyant and overly open about your successes. Then as the generation
that grew up on that kind of music became adults making $3,500-$100,000 a year,
they could afford some of the things rappers had in their videos. They could
even begin tricking their money at strip clubs, “making it rain.”
Now
with social media becoming more and more mainstream by the week, it is becoming
more and more obvious that we all just want to be big rockstars. Each day I
read the thoughts of hundreds of people and I count thousands of “selfies” on
the various social media sites I frequent each day.
What
also is happening is people are finding it harder and harder to leave things in
the past and move on. Take an ex-girlfriend for example. In the old days, you
just lost her phone number and vice versa. Once that was done you could maneuver
through your life until the next person came along.
Not
so is this the case anymore. Of course you can still quit cold turkey, but who
does that? We re-read the last chapter just enough times to be reminded why we
left in the first place. And by reading I mean we follow them on Twitter, find
their Instagram profile to see their updated photos, and it almost goes without
saying, we Facebook stalk. Even at times checking to see who’s “Liking” what. Am I just talking about me or nah?
It
cray, and nothing was the same in 2014. Especially with social media. I
recently heard a rap artist mention this in a song. He makes fun of “lame” cats
when he said, you are in love with Instagram ‘women’ and you ain’t even met
them. Welcome to the future, where you never have to leave the house to talk to
anyone. You can meet women from New York and Los Angeles all while you sit at the
kitchen table in the middle of nowhere Louisiana.
It’s
really an amazing thing. What will we look back and say about this era of
D-League rock stars 20 years from now?
Be
mindful of how you living online.
